Charting the Course: How Does Information about Sea Level Rise Affect the Willingness to Migrate?

An important yet less studied factor in determining the extent of adaptation to climate change is information: are people adequately informed about their vulnerability to future climate-related risks, and does their willingness to adapt depend on this knowledge? Focusing on how communication about projected sea level rise (SLR) affects the willingness to migrate, we implemented a large randomized control survey experiment with a nationally representative sample of more than 7,000 respondents across all provinces in Vietnam. We randomly assign respondents to different information treatments. ...

Understanding Consumer Demand for “Buy Now, Pay Later”

Consumer demand for “Buy Now, Pay Later” (BNPL) has surged, but the specific attributes consumers value remain unclear. We conduct a novel probabilistic stated choice experiment varying BNPL attributes across hypothetical scenarios to estimate consumers’ underlying preferences and their willingness to pay (WTP) for each feature. Consumers have a negative WTP for the standard bundle, on average, but younger and lower income consumers have stronger demand. Simulating consumer demand with estimated preference parameters reveals that most shifts away from the standard BNPL bundle reduce ...

State-Dependent Sticky Expectations: Evidence and Theory

We document novel stylized facts regarding updating of households' inflation expectations. Using two randomized controlled trials fielded in the US and Germany where signals in the form of professionals' inflation forecasts have different perceived levels of precision, we show that households react more to information with higher levels of precision, in line with Bayesian updating. However, in contrast to Bayesian updating, they mostly respond differently to these signals in the decision to update expectations (extensive margin) and not in the size of the adjustment (intensive margin). The ...
