Macroeconomic implications of competitive college admissions

We present a public higher education model in which there exist indivisibilities in educational investment. Consequently, when demand for educational services exceed supply, a screening mechanism, which may potentially be imperfect, is required to choose the student body. We demonstrate how distortions or biases in screening--caused by parental factors--interact with the distribution of income to help explain the considerable differences across countries in the share of resources devoted to public higher education. Moderate degrees of admission bias lower the share of resources devoted to ...

Keeping Up with the Joneses and Staying Ahead of the Smiths: Evidence from Suicide Data

This paper empirically assesses the theory of interpersonal income comparison using a unique data set on suicide deaths in the United States. We treat suicide as a choice variable, conditional on exogenous risk factors, reflecting one’s assessment of current and expected future utility. Using this framework we examine whether differences in group-specific suicide rates are systematically related to income dispersion, controlling for socio-demographic characteristics and income level. The results strongly support the notion that individuals consider relative income in addition to absolute ...

Regional research and development intensity and earnings inequality

Investment in technology increased rapidly in the United States during the past two decades, leading some to herald the birth of a "new economy." This new economy, marked by rapid productivity growth, rising incomes, low unemployment, and moderate inflation, creates a "rising tide that lifts all boats." However, during the same period U.S. earnings and income inequality increased not only between groups defined by schooling and experience but also within these groups. ; Although many researchers point to technology as the leading explanation for the increase, a cause-effect relationship ...

Long-term inequality and mobility

This brief investigates the mobility and income situation of family heads and spouses who have low long-term incomes, where long-term refers to average family income over a 10-year period. The data show that most of those in the poorest one-fifth of the long-term income distribution during the 1996?2006 period spent all or nearly all of the period?s years in the poorest fifth of the single-year income distribution, and those who escaped did not move far. Moreover, this situation has worsened over time, with the long-term poor more ?stuck? at the bottom in the 1996-2006 period than they were ...
