Fintech firms are often viewed as competing with banks. Instead, more recently, there has been growth in partnership and collaboration between fintech firms and banks. Cryptocurrency markets are often characterized by market manipulation or, at the very least, by a sharp distinction between large and sophisticated investors and small retail investors. While traditional assets often see a divergence in the success of institutional traders and retail traders, we find an even more pronounced difference regarding the holders of Ethereum (ETH), the second-largest cryptocurrency by volume. Flight to Safety: Evaluating Stablecoin’s Role as a Safe-Haven Asset in DeFi Markets

This study examines the impact of the stablecoin Tether (USDT) on systemic liquidity across the Ethereum and Bitcoin markets, utilizing an event study approach that integrates on-chain wallet data, pricing, and financial metrics. By analyzing cryptocurrency market responses to key protocol and market-moving events, augmented by nonlinear volatility models, we identify distinct, chain-specific flight-to-safety behaviors.
