Corruption and innovation

In this article, the author illustrates how corruption can affect an industry's rate of innovation. The credit risk-contingency system of an Asian development bank

This article offers a new method for the evaluation of financial institutions, one that combines socioeconomic survey data with appropriate accounting standards. A government-operated development bank in Thailand is found to be offering a risk-contingency or insurance system while being regulated as a more standard, loan-generating bank. Farmer clients experiencing adverse shocks receive indemnities that improve their well-being. With proper provisioning and accounts, that welfare gain could be weighed against premia or government subsidies.

Black–White Differences in Intergenerational Economic Mobility in the U.S.

In recent decades, blacks have experienced substantially less upward mobility and substantially more downward mobility from one generation to the next than whites. These results are shown to be highly robust to a variety of measurement issues. The author examines rates of intergenerational mobility by race and asks whether such racial differences in the U.S. are likely to be eliminated and, if so, how long it might take.

Family resources and college enrollment

This article reviews the literature on the effects of family income and tuition costs on college and enrollment and finds mixed evidence in support of tuition subsidies. The author also presents new evidence showing that college enrollment is especially sensitive to income for families with modest amounts of wealth, suggesting that borrowing constraints may be a factor in limiting access to higher education.
