Gauging Debt Levels in the U.S. and Eighth District
In this article, we look more closely at the recent developments in household debt accumulation nationally and in the Eighth District. One of the key findings is that household debt is increasing, but it has not yet reached the level observed in 2008 if adjustments are made for inflation. Also, the cause of the debt run-up in 2008 was mortgage debt. By contrast, consumer credit card debt and auto debt are the key drivers in the more recent increase.

Duration Dependence and Composition in Unemployment Spells
This article reviews the evidence for duration dependence in job-finding rates and its implications for the unemployment duration distribution. The authors document duration dependence and show that it exists within nearly every demographic subgroup. Then, they examine the implications of duration dependence on unemployment duration, emphasizing that a uniform job-finding rate that does not incorporate duration dependence understates unemployment duration. In the U.S., the unemployment rate for those under 25 hovers around 14 percent, even though the Great Recession has been over for five years. In some European countries, the rate is three times higher.

Developments in Household Debt in Eighth District MSAs
Growth in household debt, a major contributing factor to the Great Recession, has led many to worry that a debt crisis is on the horizon. Although the levels of certain types of debt are rising in the MSAs of the Eighth Federal Reserve District, serious delinquency rates have not yet reached alarming levels.

Disability Rate Exceeds Nation's; Problem Is Worse in Rural Areas
More than 4 percent of the people in the District are ?on disability,? receiving Social Security Disability Insurance benefits, vs. 2.6 percent for the rest of the country. Rural counties in the District have higher rates than do metro areas.
